How to Prepare for the First Day of School?
How to Prepare Before School Starts
- Adjust Sleep Schedule: Practice going to bed early and waking up early at a consistent time. Reduce screen time.
- Encourage Self-Sufficiency: Teach your child to take off their shoes and socks, use the toilet, and eat by themself to build confidence when alone.
- Tell Stories About School: Use storybooks to tell the first day and reduce fear.
- Prepare School Supplies Together: Invite your child to choose a new bag, shoes, and school supplies to make them feel excited and eager to go to school.
- Bring a Favorite Item: To reduce stress and build confidence, you might let your child bring a small doll or other item from home to school.
Guidelines for the First Day
Wake Up without Rushing: Prepare everything the night before to ensure the first day goes as smoothly as possible.
Say Goodbye Gently and Firmly: Hug your child, say goodbye cheerfully, say, “I will pick you up this afternoon,” and then leave immediately. Avoid looking back at your child from the fence or turning back frequently, as this may cause them to cry more.
Be Prepared for Your Child to Cry: This is very normal in the first 1-2 days. Parents should have confidence and trust in the teachers.
Pick Them Up on Time: In the first few days, it’s important to pick them up on time so they don’t feel neglected.
Ask About Fun Things: After they come home, ask about fun activities, new friends, or friends they like, instead of asking, “Did they cry today?”
Some children may adjust quickly, while others may take longer. It takes time to adjust. The parents must have confidence and trust in the teachers to ensure their children are happy and safe at school.
